On behalf of the Park’s Friends Group, Stammtisch member Sylvie Fish is currently organising an open air showing of a German silent movie in Heaton Park, Newcastle on Monday, 23 August.

G.W. Pabst’s ‘Diary of a Lost Girl’ (Tagebuch einer Verlorenen) starts at 8pm at the Pavillion, with live piano accompaniment by Neil Brand. Admission is free. For further info, email sylviefish@yahoo.com.

End Polio Now

Stammtisch member David Biermann and his wife Susan have helped create a CD to raise fund to ‘End Polio Now’. It comprises of 12 pop, folk and classical tracks and has raised to date of £2,000. The proceeds of one CD pay for five vaccinations in the remaining countries with Polio: India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. David will have copies of the CD at the BBQ Stammtisch on 26 July at the Mansion House in Jesmond, Newcastle. The cost per CD is £5.

Samba & Railways

The small Franconian town of Coburg has just hosted the world’s largest Samba Festival outside of Brazil. Around 200,000 visitors attended the yearly celebration with Samba groups from all over the world.  Participants included Rio’s reigning Carnival Queen who probably wondered in temperatures of mid 30˚C if she was on the wrong continent. Stern Online has some images of the celebration – click here.

With increasing flight costs and the odd volcano outburst, train travel – in particular on high speed trains – will maybe become more of an alternative for business and leisure travellers. State owned Deutsche Bahn has ambitious growth plans, also in the UK. It already has various operations here such as Chiltern Railways, Wrexham and Shropshire Railways, London Overground, DB Schenker, the Tyne & Wear Metro and possibly soon also bus and train operator Arriva.

The new €4 billion New Heart of Europe project will establish a high speed rail link between Stuttgart and Ulm and complete the high speed route between Budapest and Paris. This includes moving rail infrastructure and the main train station underground and redeveloping the then newly available land in the centre of Stuttgart.

Over the next four years, Deutsche Bahn plans to invest a total of €41 billion in infrastructure and new trains. Click here for full article.

If you enjoy travelling by rail and are looking for a good source of information, The Man in Seat Sixty-One is probably your best bet. Mark Smith has worked in railways throughout his career, initially for British Rail, two major UK train companies and the Dept for Transport. His passion for European and international rail travel means that other travellers can now draw from his experiences and even rail travel agents refer their passengers to his award winning blog.

Tanja Cooper, one of our Stammtisch members would like to ask for your support for her fundraising activities for Cancer Research UK.

In August Tanja will do a parachute jump from an airplane at about 4000 metres, then free fall for about 1 minute, travelling at 200 km/h towards earth. She said: “The parachute hopefully opens and I can enjoy the views of Lake Constance.”

Tanja has lived in the UK since 1998 and in Newcastle for the last five years. Her family still lives in Berlin and Bavaria

She explained the reasons behind her fundraising efforts : “I’m appealing to you today to help me raise money for Cancer Research UK and I’d really appreciate your support. I have decided that it’s time for me to be brave. My Dad has been through a lot in recent years and it wasn’t always possible for me to be there due to the distance we do live apart. He has endured the trauma of cancer twice and fought it successfully.”

If you go to Tanja’s JustGiving page, you can donate by debit or credit card:

JustGiving sends your donation straight to Cancer Research UK and automatically reclaims Gift Aid on all eligible donations, so what you give is worth even more. Thank you!

This week the German magazine published an article on the  cycle tours in Germany – click here for a link.

And if you are in Germany and haven’t got a bike with you, Deutsche Bahn might just be your saviour. Check out the iPhone app – DB Bahn Call a Bike.

I also recently found out that Deutsche Bahn have a passenger service centre in London, that can help you with rail travel in Europe either directly from the UK leaving St Pancras on the eurostar or on arrival at a European airport: www.bahn.com/uk.

If you’re looking for direct flights to Germany from the North East, you can fly daily to Duesseldorf using Lufthansa or Flybe to Hannover three times a week. Lufthansa, Brussels Airlines, KLM and BA also provide great links to other German cities.

If you have just moved to the UK from Germany, you might like to read an article the Handelsblatt recently ran. It’s all about how to behave when doing business in Britain. Click here to get to the full article.

We are also always interested to hear from people’s own  experiences relating to cultural differences between Brits and Germans and would be delighted to hear from you.

Are your planning some trips to Germany over the summer? Here are some ideas of various festivals you might enjoy:

  • Coburg hosts the largest Samba Festival outside of Brazil from 9 – 11 July
  • The free Bardentreffen takes place for 35th time in Nuremberg from 30 July to 1 August
  • The Leipziger Jazz Tage are this year from 24 September up to 3 October
  • And opera fans might head to Bayreuth from the 25 July – 28 August

A list of free festivals is available at www.festivalfieber.de/kostenlose-festivals

You might also have heard of the Oberammergau Passion Play, which was played for the first time in 1634. It only takes place every ten years, so if you’re interested – 2010 is a year to go.

And last, but not least, the Oktoberfest celebrates this year 200 years. To mark the occasion, we should really organise quite some event here too – if anybody has ideas, please share them with us!

After our last Stammtisch get-together, Iain Fergusson, Kurt Obermeier, Jo Chexal and myself talked about a potential ‘German Business Stammtisch’.

This could be of interest to people who are actively involved in doing business with Germany or even those who are looking to trade with German businesses. A separate regulars’ table could share experiences on management, recruitment, purchasing or whatever the group might think relevant. We’ve also set up a Xing Group for Stammtisch UK so that we can virtually link in with business people in German speaking countries.

If you would like to be involved in a Business Stammtisch, please email info@lexica-communications.com and also what topics/format would be of interest to you. There are around 60 German owned businesses in the region and Germany is one of the region’s largest trading partners.

The Mansion House in Jesmond will host our Spring Stammtisch on Monday, 14 June 2010. Gunther Seebacher has organised a very special ‘Blackforest Menu’ for us:

Ogen-Melone mit Schwarzwälder Schinken

**

Jägerschnitzel mit Spätzle

Bunter Salatteller

**

Apfelstrudel  mit Vanilleeis

**

Kaffee mit Mansion House Schokolade

Cost for the three course menu will be again £15/head. The bar opens at 6pm and dinner will be served at 7.15pm. The terrace at the Mansion House will also be open for drinks.

The Mansion House is the official residence of the Lord Mayor of Newcastle. More information on the venue and its location visit the website – click here.
